WRO and FIRST LEGO League in Ottawa: A Parent's Guide

For families in Ottawa whose kids catch the robotics bug, the two big competition ecosystems to know about are the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) and FIRST LEGO League (FLL). Both are excellent, but they have different structures, seasons and cultures.

FIRST LEGO League

FLL is team-based (typically 3–6 kids), theme-driven, and split into three age divisions:

• FLL Discover (ages 4–6) — LEGO Duplo, non-competitive.
• FLL Explore (ages 6–9) — LEGO with simple robots; posters and models.
• FLL Challenge (ages 9–16) — SPIKE Prime robots on a mission mat, an "innovation project", and core values judging.

Ontario regional events typically run in the fall/winter. Teams that qualify progress to provincial and then national events.

World Robot Olympiad

WRO is more traditionally competitive — timed missions, less soft-skills judging, more emphasis on autonomous performance. Categories include:

• RoboMission (Elementary / Junior / Senior) — autonomous robots solve a themed mission on a mat.
• RoboSports — 2v2 autonomous robots playing a sport.
• Future Innovators / Future Engineers — open-ended innovation categories.

Canadian WRO qualifiers usually run in spring/summer.

Which competition suits my child?

• Team-oriented, likes storytelling and posters → FLL.
• Loves pure engineering, autonomous performance, timing runs → WRO.
• Wants both → many of our students do FLL in fall and WRO in spring.

How to prepare

Neither competition is a "sign up on Sunday, compete on Monday" event. Serious teams train year-round on drivetrain design, sensor calibration, mission strategy and — critically — presenting to judges. STEMXplore runs a dedicated Competition Prep track for exactly this reason.

What competition robotics gives kids

• Deadline pressure they can survive.
• A team they need, and who needs them.
• Real engineering vocabulary — "PID", "gear ratio", "sensor threshold".
• A visible track record for eventual university applications.
