What Is the Best Age to Start Coding? A Practical Guide for Parents

The short answer: kids can start coding as early as age five, but "coding" for a five-year-old looks very different from coding for a twelve-year-old. Getting the tool right for the age is more important than starting early.

Age 5–6: cause and effect

At this age, "coding" is really about giving instructions in order. Tools like ScratchJr, LEGO WeDo and the drag-and-drop side of LEGO SPIKE Essential are perfect: no typing, no reading requirement, and immediate visual or physical feedback.

Goal: your child can make a character move, spin, wait, and repeat.

Age 7–8: sequence, loops, events

Kids can now hold a mental model of a program. Scratch, Quarky Creator and LEGO SPIKE Essential shine here. Projects become recognisable: a simple game, an animated story, a robot that reacts to a colour sensor.

Goal: your child can plan a small project on paper and then build it.

Age 9–10: real programs and physical computing

This is the golden age for Scratch and for our LEGO SPIKE Prime pathway. Kids can now build multi-level games, competition robots and Scratch projects with dozens of interacting sprites.

Goal: your child can explain their own code to someone else.

Age 10–12: bridge to text-based coding

Now the child can read fluently and type reasonably. Python is the natural next step — start with the turtle module for visual feedback, move to text games, then data structures and functions.

Goal: your child can build a small text-based program without help.

Age 12–14: apps, AI and competitions

At this stage, kids can genuinely build things they use — apps, small websites, AI-flavoured projects. This is also when WRO and FLL competition training becomes viable for kids who want to push further.

Goal: your child can pick their own project and finish it.

What if my child is already 12 and has never coded?

Perfectly fine. Nearly half our first-time Python students are 11 or 12. We do a short placement session so a new student always joins at the right level, not the "expected" one.

What matters more than starting age

  • Consistency — 60 minutes a week beats a two-day bootcamp.
  • Real projects — coding without a project is trivia.
