LEGO SPIKE Prime vs EV3: Which Should Your Child Learn?

Parents in Kanata and Stittsville regularly ask us: "SPIKE Prime or EV3?" Both are excellent LEGO robotics platforms, but they suit different ages and different goals. Here is the honest breakdown.

SPIKE Prime in one paragraph

LEGO SPIKE Prime is the newer LEGO Education platform, launched to eventually replace EV3 in schools. Its programming environment (Word Blocks and Python) is more modern, its motors are stronger, and its sensors are more accurate. It is the current standard for FIRST LEGO League Challenge.

EV3 in one paragraph

MINDSTORMS EV3 has been around longer, has a huge community, and is still used in many older FLL teams, university intro-to-robotics courses and legacy competition sets. The programming environment supports both block coding and Python.

Age recommendations

  • Ages 8–12: SPIKE Prime. Kids find the interface friendlier and progress faster.
  • Ages 10–14: Either — EV3 shines with more mature students who want to write Python or work with legacy WRO sets.

Programming environment

SPIKE Prime uses LEGO Education's Word Blocks (a Scratch-style environment) plus Python. EV3 has EV3 Classroom (also block-based) plus Python. If your child has been coding in Scratch, they will transition faster on SPIKE.

Sensors and motors

SPIKE Prime motors have built-in encoders, meaning better precision by default. EV3 motors are strong but need more careful tuning for competition accuracy. Both platforms include colour, ultrasonic and gyro sensors — with SPIKE having a slightly more modern colour sensor.

Competitions

Modern FLL Challenge seasons are best tackled with SPIKE Prime. WRO categories vary — some categories still see EV3 builds routinely. For most Ottawa families choosing today, SPIKE is the safer bet for competition longevity.

Cost and availability

Both kits are widely available in Canada. Pricing is similar. For families who plan to buy a home kit after our program, we usually recommend SPIKE Prime for its modern connectivity and better ecosystem support.

Our recommendation

If your child is between 8 and 12 and has not done LEGO robotics before, start with SPIKE Prime. If your child is 10+, comfortable with block coding, and interested in Python or older WRO categories, EV3 is a superb second platform.
